The move

(06/07/07)

The transfer of a single piece from one cell to another, together with any consequent alterations to the position. A move may be simple or compound; a compound move consists of an action (the simple move carried out by the player) and a reaction (a further move or moves specified by the laws of the game). In orthodox chess, capture, castling and promotion are compound moves. In some variants chain reactions may be possible where the consequent move has further consequences.
